About the Project

Brine water is discarded without recognizing its potential!

  • At the end of the sea salt production season there is water rich in sulfated polysaccharides and minerals that are still to be exploited;
  • Studies from University of Aveiro identified sulfated polysaccharides in brine water with immunostimulatory properties;
  • The project MARemPÓ aims to increase value of this brine water trough the formulation of new products.

Ativity 1 |

Separation and chemical characterization
of compounds from brine water

Ativity 1 | Separation and chemical characterization of compounds from brine water

The first activity focuses on (i) fractionation of the different components of brine water, followed by (ii) chemical characterization of the obtained polymeric material and (iii) development of a semi-industrial process for the separation of compounds.

Ativity 2 |

Study of the immunostimulatory
activity of the sulfated polysaccharides

Ativity 2 | Study of the immunostimulatory activity of the sulfated polysaccharides

The second activity aims to evaluate the immunostimulatory activity – in vitro – (i) in fish cells and (ii) in mouse and human cells

Ativity 3 |

Development of enriched microalgae concentrates
and a feed additive for aquaculture

Ativity 3 | Development of enriched microalgae concentrates and a feed additive for aquaculture

The third activity will explore the (i) incorporation of sulfated polysaccharides in microalgae concentrates (Immuno PhytoBloom), as well as the (ii) development of a food additive with immunostimulatory activity for aquaculture (Immuno4Fish). In this activity, a Challenge will be carried out in sea bream for (iii) validation of the immunostimulatory activity of Immuno4Fish.

Ativity 4 |

Development of a mixture of natural salts
for ex situ production of seawater

Ativity 4 | Development of a mixture of natural salts for ex situ production of seawater

The fourth activity aims to (i) formulate a mixture of natural marine salts (Sea Powder) to obtain synthetic seawater from freshwater and (ii) validate this formulation in different marine models – microalgae , corals and fish.

Ativity 5 |

Development of commercial products

Ativity 5 | Development of commercial products

The fifth activity addresses the final development of the 3 products (i) Immuno Phytobloom – the microalgae concentrate supplemented with sulfated polysaccharides, (ii) Immuno4Fish – the food additive for aquaculture with immunostimulatory activity and (iii) Mar em Pó – the mixture to based on natural marine salts.

Ativity 6 |

Promotion, dissemination
and project management

Ativity 6 | Promotion, dissemination and project management
